DR. Q and ladies... IUI and meds

August 06, 2008

I'm on my 4th round of Clomid, and my doc is giving me 2 more rounds before we go to IUI, so hopefully we won't even have to go to it! But after 19 mths of TTC #2, i'm not so hopeful.

Anyway, just wanted to know what is usually involved with the IUI as far as meds go? Is it up to each RE to determine what route and how aggressively you approach it. For instance, does everyone do the trigger shots to time it with when they're goin to do the IUI procedure? And are you still on the CLomid and possibly another med?

Anything you can tell me is helpful. Thanks :)

It depends on the doctor. Some women do clomid/IUI, femera/IUI, clomid+injectables/IUI, or just straight injectables. Some doctors Rx the hcg trigger shot, others do not.

Because of male factor infertility, my doc jumped us straight to IUI with clomid and hCG shot. They wanted to be able to most accurately time the insemination.

Some do IUI + Clomid with LH testing. My understanding is that you call the first morning you get a + LH surge and the insemination is that afternoon.

ThisISM, i know the IUI procedure is only a few hundred dollars, but its usually the meds that end up being so expesive. The clomid i've been taking is only $9/month, so i was wondering how much extra was it to get the HCG shot? And is it a series of shots around ovulation or just the one "trigger shot"?

its only 1 trigger shot of HCG, the overdril shot is a lot less expensive then the straight HCG tho.

August 06, 2008

what is Overdril? Does it do the same thing? More generic? Or what's the difference b/t IT and HCG?

I'm in the 2ww so I won't know for another week.

Sounds like you got te $9 clomid from walmart. Me too.

Yes, the shot is more expensive, so you should shop around for it. I found it cheapest at Walgreens, but CVS was willing to match the price, as was Target. I paid $78 for it.

It was one shot, 36 hours before the IUI. If you're doing double IUI's it'd be at 24 and 48 hours before the procedures.

Ovidrel IS an hCG trigger. It's a sub-Q shot vs others are intra muscular... it's supposed to be less painful. That's what I took.

a HCG shot is just a purer one i was told but the other works just as well adn costs less. Sometiems it depneds on the doc, if you have insurance coverage they will script you the HCG and if not then the other.

You take the shot and then 32-36 hours later have the IUI.

what determines whether you have just 1 IUI or 2 in a row, like a Fri and Sat as some of you have mentioned.

mainly, your doc
