Dialted and Effaced... What does this mean??

Hi All,

I went to the doctors this morning because over the weekend I noticed alot of cramping. It wasnt too bad but sort of frequent. Also I thought I may have lost my mucus plus on Sunday too. Anyways, I'm 35w6d pregnant today and I went to the doctors and had an internal and she said the baby dropped completely and she felt his head! She said I am 1cm dialated and 70% effaced and the baby was at a station -3 or 3... I cant remember what she said. Well of course I am a wreck! I'm just nervous about delivering so early because I'm only 36 weeks (tomorrow). Does this mean I am close to having the baby? Or is it normal to be 1cm dialated and 70% effaced for a while before he comes out? Anyone know? Thanks so much!

I have been dialated to 1 cm for about 5 weeks and still no baby ( 39 weeks Thursday) and effacing just means that your cervix is thinning out which is a good thing but nothing is be concerned about...the baby being at minus 3 station means that he hasn't dropped compeletly into the birth canal...my doc can feel the baby's head as well and as been able to for about 3 weeks so just try and take it easy for another couple of weeks then start walking!

Hey hun. I too was dilating and 85% effaced. Effaced means your cervix has thinned and shortened. And dilating is when the cervix streches open. You will be delivering very soon. Relax and get plenty of rest. You can probably prolong delivery but doc should have put you on bed rest and explained what has happened. Do rest dear. Good luck to a happy healthy baby!

Get ready Keller- sounds like he is almost ready! Ive read in lots of places that having a baby at 36 weeks is just fine, and they are still very healthy!

Take it easy- and like the other ladies said- it might be a matter of you slowing down- Go nest and then rest! LOL Take care, and Id tell DH to stay home from that trip..... :)

I would get bags packed and get everything ready but it doens't mean he will be here anytime soon, with my daughter 3 years ago I compleletly thinned out before I ever went into labor, this time around I am doing the same thing and in the process almost 5 weeks he still could be an october baby or late september

I just really wasnt expecting anything to be going on already! I dont know if my hubby is going on his work trip... I pray he doesnt!

Ohh and last week when I went to the dr. I was nothing. Not effaced or dialated. So in 1 week I went to 1cm and 70% effaced. How long does it usually take to get to 100% effaced? Also when at 100% effaced does that mean I'll go into labor soon? Or does it not mean anything at all? This is all so confusing!

My hubby as been telling his boss for the past 5 weeks that he doesn't know if he will be in the next day, it is funny becuase he keeps going back, tell him you want him to stay home you need him just incase something does happen!

I know, I hate for him to go on this trip. Plus it's all the way to the Bahamas... how would I even contact him?!

We are going tomorrow to have our car seats inspected and I'm gonna pack my bag (just in case!). I didnt even know you had to have the car seat inspected! I just found this out last week!
