This is a different type of protocol used to help induce ovulation, here's some facts about what's going on...
Your doc may be concerned that you may not ovulate on the clomid, hence you're already placed on the provera to induce a period. You're absolutely correct with what you've read and is the more common thing to do...you Ob may be wanting to supplement your own progesterone with oral Provera (which is progesterone), but we know that oral progesterone is poorly absorbed and only found in minimal amounts inside the uterus, where it counts. Furthermore, taking the progesterone at this time, if you were to ovulate may hinder ovulation and or pregnancy.
My advice, but consult with your own doc, would be to take the Clomid as directed and if after a month no period comes, then take the Provera, of which your period will come a few days after your last pill. This would mean you didn't ovulate so you may have to take a higher dose of clomid the following month and would require the care of a doc to titrate the clomid dose.
