Clomid and Late Ovulation

May 21, 2008

Hello. I am seeking my doctor's opinion, but would like yours as well. Please see my questions below and the responses I've received so far. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

1. I have done two rounds of Clomid on CD3-CD7. The first round was 50mg and the second was 100mg. If I am not pregnant, what dosage should I take for my 3rd round and should I continue taking it CD3-CD7?

ANSWER: Move to 150mg and take CD5-CD9 due to the late ovulation and long cycles.

** ADDITIONAL QUESTION FOR RESPONSE:

1a. By moving to CD5-CD9 while increasing the dosage of Clomid to 150mg should ovulation occur sooner or later? (awaiting response)

2. . Is there a certain OPK test that is more accurate than others I should use? I tend to have to go though more than one box due to my late ovulation which is expensive so a cheap and accurate test would be preferred. I have found online (http://www.saveontests.com/Ovulation.htm) cheap ovulation tests and test strips which measure 25mIU/mL with 99.8% accuracy. Would you recommend trying these and do the test strips work as well as the actual mid-stream test? (Note: I have tried First Response, Clear Blue Digital and Answer. The positives I have received have all been from the Answer OPK.) (awaiting response)

3. Has anyone used the ovwatch (www.ovwatch.com)? If you have, was it successful for you?

Good questions Melinda! I have been taking clomid 50mg days 3-7 for 2 cycles, which are anywhere between 32-37 days long, so I shall be interested in the reply too. I ovulate by myself and the clomid is just to boost things, I have not been told to increase it. Do you ovulate by yourself?? How long are your cycles?

Hi Suzi and thanks for your response. I have only been tracking my cycles for 4 months now so I'm still trying to figure things out. I went off the pill in March of 07 and went to my dr last Oct b/c of no period. She diagnosed me with PCOS and gave me prometrium to start my pd. It worked and she said that if I hadn't gotten my pd by CD35 I should continue using it until I was ready to start clomid. Well, as mentioned before I started clomid and this is my 2nd cycle. She said to start with 50mg and then next to try 100mg and to keep up with the prometrium if needed. I spoke with her today b/c I thought I was ovulating and heard it's not good to ovulate while on prometrium. She agreed and said to wait 2 weeks after ovulation to take a hpt and if neg then start prometrium again. Determining ovulation has been hard b/c I start prometrium about the same time and so I can't tell which is causing the temp rise. Hopefully now that I know to wait on prometrium I can better determine my cycle length since it's been just coorrelating with the prometrium.

Well I hope that information helps!

Taking Clomid at these dates shouldn't extend or decrease the cycle length to any significant effect if one's cycles were regular to begin with...

At this time, FertilityTies doesn't endorse any particular brands, but can always ask others to see what has worked for them or not...

Hi Melinda, it all sounds very complicated for you, it must be extremely frustrating!! Hoping that things fall into place very soon for you! xx

Hello, I took Clomid 50mg and it did extend my cycle by 4 days and went back to normal after the 3 cycles of it. I took it on cd5-9 and ovulated on cd11 or12 and didn't get AF until cd16. So I never had to start OPK until like cd12 instead of cd10. Now that I'm off clomid my cycle is shorter again, ovulate on CD11 and AF on CD28. The kit that I like the best is the one with the Happy face by clearblue. It is more expensive but it takes out the guessing. You can use the cheap ones when you start testing early but when you get closer start using the digital happy face to be sure. Lots of luck, BABY DUST!!!!

ps. If you do use the happy face ones you can pull the stick out when it is done and see how the lines change. They tell you not to use that as any results but I noticed my changing as it got closer to ovulation time.
