Changes of a New Successful Pregnancy

April 06, 2008

I am trying to conceive my second child but am worried about my chances of misscarraige. I'm concerned is because I had my first diagnosed miscarriage in January and think I may be pregnant now, although I have not taken a pregnancy test yet. Please bear with me, but I've written a lot of information below in the hopes that some of it may be useful in answering my question.

I am an almost 32-year-old mother of a 4-year-old girl. Despite the fact that I have had irregular periods (usually much shorter than average cycles) from the time I began menstruating, when my husband and I decided to start a family, I stopped taking birth control pills (which I starting taking to regulate my periods when I was 16) and we conceived her almost immediately. When I found out I was pregnant with her, I had some brief spotting and was told my HCG levels were somewhat low. Upon receiving the results of my second HCG test, my OBGYN informed me that the the levels were increasing, albiet not as fast as they would normally like to see. Neverthess, with no special recommendations from my DR, I carried her to 39 weeks and she was born extremely health.

Last year my husband and I decided to try for a second child so I stopped taking my BC pill in May and we began trying in August. After stopping the pill, my periods resumed their usual irregular schedules and on 12/24/07, I got what I thought was my period. Although my flow became lighter, I continued bleeding into January. Eventually, I got concerned about this and called my OBGYN on January 6, 2008. I was surprised to learn that I was actually pregnant, but devastated when he told me on 1/8/08 that my HCG count was only 74 and he suspected a misscarriage. Sure enough, 2 days later a second blood test confirmed that my HCG levels dropped by half and that I was indeed experiencing a misscarriage.

Later that month, my doctor confirmed that the misscarriage was complete and he instructed me to wait 2 natural cycles before staring to try again. I began trying again in March and think I may be pregant again. Although it has been 2 weeks since my suspected date of ovulation and I have thankfully not experienced any bleeding this time, I am almost scared to confirm these results with either a urine or blood test.

Does it appear that I am at risk for another misscarriage, and if so, is there anything I can do to improve the odds?

Sorry for all the typos and spelling mistakes - the title of the comment I just posted should read "Chances of a New Successful Pregnancy" not "Changes"

I'm sorry for your loss but wanted to tell you that you have an excellent chance of having a healthy pregnancy even though you did have a miscarriage. I had two miscarriages myself in a row and that was after having two healthy pregnancies and babies. So try not to worry and pleae take an hpt so we can know for sure if you are pregnant and you can then start to see an obgyn. :) Good luck to you!

Kelly K- I agree with Sar22222- best to take that HPT and if positive start seeking prenatal care!

I wish I had found this website a long time ago. I really appreciate everyone's nice comments. I took a HPT this morning and it was negative. Unless I start bleeding, however, I'll retest in about a week and keep optimistic. Thanks.

Hi Kelly-

Your chances of a normal, healthy pregnancy are far better than those of having another miscarriage. I had a miscarriage in June 2007 at almost 8 weeks. I conceived again, in October 2007...and I am currently 26 weeks pregnant. I know you are scared, but please take a test!! I'm praying your get your big fat positive soon!

Ok - Ladies, Dr. Q, or anyone else with advice, I took another HPT and once again got a negative result. Meanwhile, I'm not bleeding or spotting and have continuosly felt like I either could be pregnant or experiencing PMS (i.e., nausea w/o vomiting, mild stomach discomfort (although it's not as severe I my cramps usually are), bloating, and tender enlarged breasts). As noted above, I have irregular periods, but since last fall have been somewhat able to expect AF about 2 weeks after getting an LH surge reading with an OPK, give or take a day or 2. My last surge was almost 3 weeks ago. Should I wait a few day and test again, call my OB, or just assume AF will arrive any day?

Hi Kelly, I would give it a few days and test again. If you still get a negative and no AF, I would call the MD and see what's up.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the well wishes. AF came over the weekend. On the plus side, my OB just prescribed Clomid, which I will start taking tomorrow. I posted a question about Clomid Use on the Q& A section but will call my Dr for further instructions tomorrow.
