Hi doc.

we ve been trying to conceive for 1 yr, bt no luck..My doc said , i ve polycystic ovaries. bt my periods are regular (jus a day or two late every month). My husband has varicocele. i took my first clomid this month. If my husband does his surgery for varicocele, then in how many months will his sperm count become normal. and what are my chances of pregnancy.

Hi ppp,

The data is truly unclear whether repairing a varicocele truly helps to significantly improve sperm, and have seen many studies and patients in which no improvement was ever noted. I don't discourage this procedure to be performed, but you should be aware... you always have the option of your husband not having this procedure done. It will take a couple of months to recover from this procedure at which time another semen analysis can be done.

Your chances of pregnancy are very much age related along with sperm function.

Hi doc!

Thank you so much for answering. My age is 25 and my hubby's 28. He is going to do another sperm analysis on monday. The previous one was taken 4 weeks before and it showed 12.6 million with 20% motility. When concerned a doc, he said that my husband has lotz of blood vessels in the testis area, which made the sperm production low. How can it be recovered?. Will i be able to conceive even with low sperm count using clomid? can i go for IUI now?

Hi ppp,

With these Sperm values, the only way for conception would be through IVF+ICSI and would honestly be surprised if the values were raised significantly after a varicocelectomy...can happen but would be suprising.

If you have $ for the repair and if it fails IVF, then worth a shot at repair. If $ is limited, would probably just go straight to IVF as it will give you the best shot....IUI is not an option with these numbers, but let us know what the repeat is, and have mentioned before on this site the amt and calculation of Total Motile Sperm needed for IUI.

Like a varicolectomy, consideration can also be given to purchasing products such as Fertile One, Proxeed, FertileAid, etc, but only helps a little, and may not be sooo much per say that he get's back to normal

Hello doc!

Thank you very much!. I find this site very useful.I am eargerly waiting for the next analysis result. But one thing, they say that only 1 sperm is needed to do the job. But inspite of having 12 million 20% motility, will i nt b able to conceive?.is it 100% impossible?..n y?...im so frustrated every month..

Hi ppp,

Although only one sperm is needed, >99% of sperm die in the Vagina after ejaculation and never had a chance. That's why there has to be so many million motile sperms so that a few can actually make it all the way up to the tubes to find the egg. If there's a deficiency, such as poor motility, they may not make it up.

Although not impossible, it is unlikely. Yet, with Advanced IVF technologies, you can have a great shot at having a family.

How much does it cost for IVF?? Also how much does it cost to get a sperm count done from the doctors office??

I know I talked to you dr. about getting Fertill, but there are soo many others out there too, but Im just wondering if it would be easier to get him checked at the doctors office, and just trying to see the price difference from that to the stuff you can buy.

Thanks so much.

Also is there ANY way to find out if I ovulated this month? I know I told you I went to the doctor August 20th and they said that I hadnt ovulated and werent sure if I have been at all due to PCOS, but Im just wondering if this month there was a chance that I did, and how in the world I could get an answer, if thats even possible to find out.

Thank you, and I hope this isnt a dumb question. I just gave up on doing the OPKs this month when I found out I had PCOS, and decided if by day 40 or so of my cycle if I didnt start AF then I was going to get put on medicine. I just keep wondering in the back of my mind if I could have ovulated, and not known and if there is ANY small chance im pregnant, its probably the Prometrium playing tricks on me with its side effects but still. I just have heartburn soo bad, my lower back hurts a little, and it NEVER hurts is ALWAYS my upper back due to muscle spasems, then my lower abdomen feels funny, and last night I couldnt hardly sleep, kept getting hot, and couldnt lay on my stomach (it didnt hurt but it was just not comfortable like it always is), and I couldnt sleep, and had CRAZY dreams...kinda funny too.

Anyways thank you soo much Dr. and anyone else who can help me on this one...im sooo confused!!

Hi Jolene,

Any lab is fine for a semen analysis and these can range from $150-$400, and after the cost of meds are considered for IVF, it will cost just over $10,000 per attempt.

While you're on Prometrium right now, almost impossible to figure out if you ovulated this month or previous months. Hang in there, try and relax a little, and once done with Prometrium, hope you get on Clomid and/or other meds to help you ovulate, and like always, wishing you and everyone the best of luck!

Hi doc....

I got my hubby's report (semen analysis) yesterday. It was better than before , count - 27.6 million with 70% motility, earlier it was 12.6 million with 10% motility. We consulted the doctor, he has given us medication instead of surgery(varicocele). He asked us to try for 3 months with these med. I ve started developin hope..will this med's support to increase count again?..
