I was on birth control for about 7 years. I started when I was 14 going on 15 and now I'm 21 going on 22. My fiance and I are trying to conceive. I was on Tri-Cyclen for a few years and then the Evra patch and then I ended with Depo Provera for about 2 years. My last shot of Depo was on May 24, 2007. It's been about 21 months since my last shot. Should I be fertile again by now? I'm really worried that being on birth control for that long, especially the Depo messed up my system. I'm paranoid that I don't ovulate or that I'll have scarring on the uterus or something. Is there any hope that I'll conceive? What are the chances that my body is really screwed up because of BC? Or could I be perfectly fine and it's all in my head?

Hi ttc2,

There's basically no problem with anyone taking these birth control methods. If you're having monthly periods with PMS symptoms, then you're ovulating

I have to disagree with Dr. Q's comment. I have ovulation symptoms every month, even positive OPKs, and a typical 28 days cycle, yet I do not ovulate.

I have a hormone imbalance as a result of years on birth control. I am just completing my 3rd Clomid cycle (150mg) with blood work confirming that I did not ovulate.

Because Clomid was not successful, My journey TTC is now over until I have better insurance.

I certainly hope these issue do not apply to you, but you may want to ask your ob to do a cycle day 21 progesterone level to confirm you are ovulating. It's an easy test that can help identify or eliminate problems.

Hi ttc22: as Dr. Q mentioned there shouldn't be problems for the most part (or majority of women) when taking these birth control methods, but like Tess suggested and is experiencing, there's always a possibility, although not the norm, you could run into issues and best like she suggested to ask for a progesterone level test to make sure if you're truly ovulating or not.
