Can pregnancy help with PCOS?

November 24, 2008

I was diagnosed with PCOS back when I was ttc. After ttc for 2yrs, I finally conceived. I now have a 10 month old and am still breastfeeding. My period has returned recently and it's been very regular.. 28-32 day cycles. I have never been regular my entire life so this has been very nice to know exactly when my period will be. My question is this, does going through pregnancy improve your symptons or even take away PCOS? It seems like it's done that for me but I didn't know if that's possible or not! Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Hi Dina,

Going through pregnancy doesn't necessarily improve PCOS.. What we know truly does is even small weight loss can improve this significantly

Breastfeeding does expend alot of calories to make and secrete the milk, and thus this promotes weight loss

Well back when I was diagnosed with PCOS I was average and not overweight. I am 5.6" and weiged 145lbs yet had PCOS. So I don't think mine was a weight thing. Since having my baby I have not lost all the pregnancy weight even though I am nursing (grr!!), and now weigh 170. So now that I am heavier, my periods are regular which is totally opposite and doesn't make sense with the whole PCOS "rules".

Mine happen just the opposite.. After giving birth My period started to come less and less..

Hmm... well I guess it's just different for each person. I heard that pregnancy can restore the balance of hormones if you had a problem with it before so that's what I was wondering since it seemed to have done that with me so far.

I think Harmonal imbalances are a result of PCOS and not the Cause. According to my Ob Gyn as well, PCOS is not cured by pregnancy. I had PCOS too in 2006 and I was borderline overweight not obese. But losing those few extra pounds and following a healthy lifestyle and food habits got rid of the PCOS. As of 2007 Aug my test results were all clear and I also fell pregnant. Good luck to all!!

Well my husband and I tried the clomid for a few months and nothing happened. We stopped and took and break and decided to "try" and not think about it. My friend told me about taking natural progesterone cream to balance my hormones. I did some research on it and found it to be very beneficial to women who had PCOS. Well after 3 months of using it, we got pregnant on our own! While using it, I was charting my cycles by taking my temps, etc and noticed I started ovulating! It did wonders for me and that's what I'm going to go back on after I finish nursing.
