Can not have epidural..What can I expect?

June 16, 2008

Ok, here is the deal. I can not have an epidural due to the risk that it will cause more damage to my back than I already have. I am scared as to what to expect since there is no way I can have an epidural. If a c-section is the chosen delivery method then it will include an iv of medication to lighten up the pain. Do these drugs have an effect on the baby? I am not really worried about a natural vaginal delivery except for the potential tearing that may occur. Is there anything you would recommend as far as pain management (classes etc) for me to look into. My ob just recommend I take some pregnancy classes during my pregnancy but nothing about which type of classes would be best given my situation. Any advice/opinion would be of appreciation

I hope some people can offer some pregnancy classes and/or having a coach present can help you during delivery...

IV medications are fairly safe, but they do depress the baby a little, commonly done and little to worry about...an epidural has no effect on the baby...

Shana- call your hospotal that you are delivering at.. they generally have classes for pregnant moms...

I had a ce section and the pain meds did not effect the baby... or at least that I know of..

i didnt have an epideral with my 1st and when i had it with my 2nd it didnt work and that scared the hell out of me! It froze my left leg and my butt - i was so freaked that i was gonna be messed up.

I have lots of back issues so i dont know that i would want to do that again either.

I dont know about classes but ........

I had a regular labor with my daughter so i got to walk around the hospital and then i got to shower which was the best for the pain! OMG, i think i was in there for hours! The hot water hitting my belly was the best feeling ever!

I also love having my hair brushed so my DH at the time would brush and stroke my hair to make me feel better. I had the baby outfit with me that i would take her home in and that was my "focal point" and would remind me why i was doing this.

That helped a lot too.

Find something that you really enjoy - scents of candles even!

Thank you, I am just a bit worried since there is no way possible I can have an epidural. Most people have had epidurals and the classes at my hospital seem to be more designed for those having an epidural than helping those of us that cant. Though maybe its the classes that Im looking at, since I have not actually asked the hospital if they offer classes for those who can not have epidural. I have a long time to go (Im only 19 weeks along) before the delivery. But this stuff has been worrying me for weeks now.

awwwe, try not to worry - plenty of people dont have epiderals and its a-ok. Im sure its easier to have one but i wouldnt know and i have 2 kids. Wish i could know but like i said it didnt work for me.

I would say look into alternative treatment centers or google midwives cuz they cant give them so there have got to be oterh options out there!

Lots luck!!
