Can miscarriages be hereditary?

January 07, 2008

My mother had 4 children all with one ovary. Never lost a pregnancy. I on the other hand had an ectopic pregnancy. Im wondering if my next pregnancy I will be ok. Does the fact that my mother never had a miscarriage, increase my chances of having a good pregnancy? Just wondering if family history have anything to do with this? Thanks.

sorry, i dont know for sure but i dont think that they are hereditary, either way - in a good way or bad. Woman had miscarriages early when our parents were young and didnt know it since they didnt have the very early tests that we have. They would have a later period and think nothing of it. Many woman have miscarriages, it is so much more common that we would have ever thought.

For the vast majority of cases, miscarriages are spontaneous and random...

There are a very few, very small percentage of the population that although are normal appearing, have some form of chromosomal abnormality (such as translocations, ring chromosomes, etc) and some of these although random when conception occured, can be hereditary..but this is a very, very small proportion of the population...

IVF with PGD is sometimes done to determine which are the normal embryos to transfer into the person..

There are some hereditary blood disorders that can cause a predisposition to miscarriage. Sometimes it is a blood clot in the umbilical cord - or, on rare occasion, a fetus will strangle to death from the cord. A good percentage of miscarriages have no known cause.

Almost every woman in my family has had multiple miscarriages - and all but one have had children.
