Can injections affect the results of ovulation tests?

April 08, 2007

I am thoroughly confused b/c my ovulation test 4 days ago had 2 solid lines indicating ovulation to occur soon. Another test today indicated again that I would be ovulating soon by the test line being solid and reference line faint. Can taking injections cause inaccurate results? My IUI isnt for another few days.

Injections, in particular Repronex or Menopur, can create minimally faint lines on the ovulation predictor kits. This is primarily due to the fact that both of these medications areabout 50%FSH/50%LH, this high LH concentration can create these minimally faint lines. Other medications, such as Gonal F or Follistim which are 100% FSH should have no bearing with Bravelle having about 2-5%LH also falling in this region. If you're having these minimally positive faint results, you may have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) which sometimes also makes patients have a slightly higher LH count giving these false reference lines. In the end, I wouldn't worry too much about these faint lines and would continue checking until a strong positive result comes up which will result when your follicle(s) usually become greater than 19-20mm. If you're going past day 10, you should have an ultrasound by your RE to make sure follicular growth is adequate. If you have further questions, please feel free to ask.
