Thanks Dr Q!
Can a cyst filled ovary still produce and release mature eggs
August 15, 2007
I am in the middle of the wait and watch period of finding out I had 2 polycystic ovaries, the doctor is not convinced I have PCOS, he thinks my ovaries just went into shock after coming off of the pill for more than 10 years. I will have an ultrasound next week to see if they went away on their own. My question is: could an egg have been released even though my both my ovaries are full of cysts, or will it kind of "shut down" till the cysts go away.

Your ovaries will have most likely shut down and not produced an egg if you had ovarian cysts present on ultrasound. The cysts usually produce enough Estrogen that your brain (hypothalamus) reads and basically tells your body "things are looking good and we don't need to make more follicle stimulating hormone for the ovaries", when in reality...this is not the case.
Once your cysts go away, your ovulatory cycles should start up on their own since there won't be this excess Estrogen floating around.
