Calling All Moms! I need help!

November 10, 2008

Since yesterday Cameron has been giving me a hard time drinking his bottles. Last week he went from drinking 5, 6oz. bottles a day to 5, 5oz bottles a day and the pediatrician said that was okay since he is eating solids now.

But starting yesterday he will only drink 3oz at a time and now today only 2oz!! What is his problem???? I know he is teething but he doesn't act like he is having any discomfort with it. I rubbed orajel on his gums, he hates it, but he still didn't drink. He'll drink the 2-3oz and then just start pushing the bottle away or he starts chewing on the nipple. He cries like an hour later but he wont drink a bottle, so I feed him fruit and veggies or veggies and cereal. He now eats solids 3x a day. But I know that just because he is eating solids now, he should not decrease his formula amount. So what do I do? He won't drink. Do I call the ped?

November 10, 2008

Btw, he is still his happy self, no rashes, no cough, no runny nose, no fever. He just wont drink.

November 10, 2008

The only thing that I could think is that maybe he has an ear infection? When my son would have an ear infection, he wouldn't want to drink.

Also for teething, you could try Hylands Teething Tablets. They are all natural and disolve right away. I'm sure you know this but you have to be real careful with oragel because it can burn their throat if they get too much of it.

If you can't figure it out maybe call his ped. like you said.

Hope this helps :)

November 10, 2008

I thought ear infection too, but he doesn't cry when he sucks, he just pushes it away like he doesn't like it now. So weird. I'm real careful with the orajel, I have the one that comes in a

Q-Tip so application is the right amount everytime.

November 10, 2008

Also if it was an ear infection would he suck his pacifier? Cause that darn thing is like a bad addiction to him. LOL

November 10, 2008

i thought ear infection right away too amy, the sucking of the bottle can really bother them so they just refuse it.

If not that then maybe he is just going thru a phase or isnt thirsty - maybe try giving him less of the solids so that he is more hungry?

November 10, 2008

Maybe have his ears checked just to be sure. My son didn't always cry either.

Keep me posted...I hope everything is ok and he's just being a stinker!

November 10, 2008

Here is our schedule.

Up at 5:30am, give a bottle (this morning he only drank 3oz)

6:30am solids

10am, bottle, he only drank 2oz

11am, solids

1pm, bottle, he drank 3oz

4:30pm, bottle, he drank 2oz

and now I normally give solids but I haven't cause he barely drank anything.

7:30pm, bottle (usually 5oz but tonight..who knows)

Bedtime 8pm

November 10, 2008

Is it true if it's an ear infection the ears smell?

November 10, 2008

I have 2 girls- this could be a long shot- maybe the oragel and the formula make it taste yucky so he would rather refuse the bottle all together?

November 10, 2008

Sar222 thats for

you...

November 10, 2008

I don't think my son ever refused the pacifier LOL! The other way to tell that they may have an ear infection is when they lay down. Laying down (nap time and bed time) hurts their ears so if he's fine then it could be something else.

My ped. told me to give him formula first then food so that he gets the formula he needs. Sounds like you may have tried that though.

November 10, 2008

i never had any smell from the kids earl infections but they would run a slight fever or rub their ears and they are very common around teething time.

November 10, 2008

My son has had plenty of ear infections and I have never heard that....doesn't mean its not true though.

November 10, 2008

I always give the bottle first, then wait an hour or so and give solids. I never give solids first. I also dont give the orajel at feeding time. I did a half hour ago but that was after he already refused the bottle. Argggghhh he is sooo frustrating. He's sittin here smiling and talking to me, but wont drink. It's been several hours since he drank anything. Like 1pm.

November 10, 2008

Call his ped. Can't hurt anything...

At least he's happy :)

November 10, 2008

I just called, hopefully he'll call back soon. I just got him to finish the bottle. First 5oz bottle he drank all day..it only took him an hour.lol

Thanks girls!

November 10, 2008

sarah sweetie!!! this stinks! I'm so sorry. my gf's son did this when he was teething. so it may be the cause. I guess it hurt to eat! What a mess. I'm dealing with what I think is teething too!! Caden won't sllep for more than an hour!!! What a disaster!!!! hugs

November 10, 2008

LOL Fran...what a disaster is right!!! :)

So here's what happened..the ped calls me back and says okay, no big deal that he's not drinking as much and that this may only last a day or two and to monitor it, if he seems dehydrated then bring him in. Well, he is not dehydrated, so that's no problem. Then she asked if he had any sort of rash on his body. I say nope, none. But he does have some small red dots around his mouth that I thought was a pacifier rash, but today the little red dots are moving up his cheeks towards his eyes. She said no big deal as long as they aren't on his body. So we hang up, leaving it that he's just being a bit fussy and it will pass in a day or two.

One hour later, I go to give him a bath and low and behold....the RASH! All over his body, little red dots and his skin looks all splotchy. His left arm from the elbow to his hand is purple, but his right arm is okay. So weird. I call the ped back and she says, hmmmmm, bring him in. So off we go. She examines him, his eyes clear, throat good, ears are good, breathing good. But, yep, he has a viral rash. At first she thought it could be a strep rash, but his throat is clear. She said this also explains why he isn't drinking as good. Also, it's gonna get worse before it gets better and he may develop a fever. As long as it stays 101 or below and only for a day or two, just give tylenol. If the rash turns in to water filled sores or puss filled then call back. So that's the scoop. Poor Cam has the "GOK" Rash (God only knows rash)LMAO!! I just put him down for the night and he did drink 5oz of formula, lets pray he sleeps well. Thanks for all your help girls :)

Fran, I hope little Caden snaps out of this poor sleep routine real fast. I remember going through the same darn thing not to long ago and asking you for advice. lol

November 10, 2008

aww hugs to Cam and Caden..Hope they get back to their routines soon.

Sarah what causes the Viral rash??? Did he have a shot or is it allergy from the new food? Im so dumb, I have no idea what Id do if I had to experience these..Reg the 3 Oz and 2 oz and 1 hr sleep, no adviise, coz thats my baby's routine all the time, but shes healthy so I guess, I could ignore that?

November 10, 2008

A viral rash for a baby is just like you and I getting a cold. They come out of the blue and sometimes it's just a rash and sometimes they also have fever, vomiting, diarrhea. Change of weather, being around someone older who is sick, basically germs. I dont even let the kids on the school bus sit with him. I'm a lunatic about it. LOL. I hate germs.

November 10, 2008

Sorry Sarah! Nathan had a rash all over his body when he was about 5 months old. It was Roseola. High fever with the rash. He was in day care at the time. It lasted a few days.

I hope he's feeling better soon.

November 10, 2008

Thanks. I have the day off tomorrow so it'll be a nice pajama day and relaxing and cuddling.

November 10, 2008

Awe big hugz to cam hope his better soon and drinking...Pj days rule sarah Im coming to your house so I can join in lol....

November 11, 2008

Sarah...NOOOO! Poor liitle Cam! How is he today? I hope a little better, but if it gets worse before better than probably not! :( please give me an update!

So Caden........fussy last night, but I just kept playing with him, which is unusual b/c he normally can hang by himself if I need to get some stuff done. Went down very easily which was great and gave him some tylenol before bed. SLept untl 4:30am....heard him a couple of times, but didn't get up and he went back to sleep. Then at 4:30 we was whinning very loudly and Nick went in and didn't pick him up but shushed him back to sleep. Well this then happened at 5:00, 5:15 and at 5:45 when he was super loud and shushing wasnt working so then we picked him up and tried baby oragel......no help! So we fed him and then super happy!

So is it teething? The tylenol seemed to help, but I don't want to do that every night and does he need more formula??? He is on 6 oz every feeding, but his night which is 7oz............????? thoughts?

November 11, 2008

Well with all of my kids they went thru little stages where they would refuse to drink as much milk, and my ped always just told me to keep offering and adventually he will eat again when he knows that is all that is going to be offered. From the way my ped. explained it babies just go thru fazes where they will refuse to eat/drink something, but as long as you keep at it and keep offering it they will take it. Mine always started this when they thought they were ready for more solids.

I hope he is doing better for you today hun!

Keep us posted!
