Brown Spotting for Two Months !!!!

September 15, 2007

Hi, I'm 33 years old and I've been having this brown discharge/spotting on and off since june this year. My dr put me on provera which made it worst. I bleed more so I stopped and I was back to spotting. On Aug. 5 my brown spotting/light bleeding finally stopped. Then I start having this yellowish discharge and on Sept. 1 I had my normal period until Sept. 4 then I'm back to the yellowish discharge (whenever I wipe) On Sept. 11 I started having brown discharge again, it's not heavy (used one pentiliner each day) but it's very annoying since I'm trying to get pregnant. I had a pelvic ultrasound, pelvic exam, blood test, etc. All came back normal. I wonder if this could be PCOS or something more serious? Should I request more test? My doctor will test my progesterone level next week. Should I request biopsy? I'm not pregnant or on any birth control pills. I don't have any other symptoms besides this brown discharge.

Hi Crystal,

I'm assuming your doc took cultures or looked under the microscope to make sure there isn't an infection. The brown spotting won't hinder you much from getting pregnant, unless you have an endometrial polyp or submucosal polyp that is causing this (more common in women over 30) and only through a sonohysterogram or hysteroscopy can this be diagnosed. A biopsy is usually recommended when you're 35 y/o or greater. Hope this info helps and keep us posted

Thanks Dr. Q. I'm not sure if my dr already checked for infection. I'm sure he did since we had gone thru physical exam, ultrasound, blood test, urine test, etc. I wonder what test do I need to find out if I have any fibroids or polyps? Should I request transvaginal one? Two different OB dr couldn't find any when they did the physical exam. I'm glad to hear that the brown discharge wouldn't prevent me from being pregnant. It's kinda scary to have brown liquid leaking out from time to time. Thanks again

Hi Crystal,

Ultrasound would be sufficient to see if you have fibroids. A submucosal endometrial polyp, though, you would need a sonohysterogram or hysteroscopy.

Thanks again Dr. Q. One more question. I'm currently taking Women's one a day vitamin. However, I heard that folic acid, vitex and Clomid would help women who try to conceive. My OB dr sugguest that I can take Clomid. But I wonder if there's any side effect. I've been "trying" to conceive for only two or three months before my "spotting/discharge" issue. I stop trying once I had the problem becuase I kept thinking something is wrong with my body. Which option do you think is best for me. Thanks

Hi Crystal,

Clomid can definately help you ovulate and increase your pregnancy rate...side effects include hot flushes, mood swings, cramping, headaches...I know kind of rough but it definately helps

Hi Dr. Q

I just got my blood test result today. My progesterone level is only .8 while estrogen is within normal range which is over 200. I wonder if this is the reason of my spotting problem and also will this prevent me from getting pregnant. I wonder if there's any way to increase my progesterone level? Thanks

Hi crystal,

you still haven't ovulated so not to worry about Progesterone, and may be close given your estrogen levels, check opks, watch for ewcm, and hopefully you'll ovulate soon

Hi Dr Q,

Thanks for your sugguestion. I heard women with low progesterone level take progesterone pills or insert cream, etc. Do I need my dr to prescribe me or I can get it at the drug store? Also, I've been having pimples on my chin and along the jaw, do you think that has to do with my progesterone level? Thanks

Hi Crystal,

The best Progesterone is either intramuscular or micronized vaginal tablets to get the maximal effect, but they do require an Rx. Pimples generally have more to do with Testosterone levels, and/or PCOS patients who have higher than normal Test. Only by going to your doc for an exam, however, can this be conclusive
