Breastmilk and birthcontrol.. HELP.. urgent!!!! (Doctors?!)

July 15, 2008

I was taking a Progestin only pill, but b/c I was still spotting my midwife gave me a full strength pill (with estrogen) and she swore up and down it would not dry up my milk or anything like that.

I've been taking it for 5 days, and I've seen a HUGE reduction in my milk supply!!!!!!!!

I'm going back to the progestin only pill tomorrow morning.. will my milk pick back up? Do I need to do anything else to help it get there?

I'm really freaking out b/c I don't want to quit bf'ing!!!!! I don't want to have to give him formula!!!

Hope I get a response soon.. so my mind can be at ease...

Combination pills do dry up the milk supply, and if you stop, you should resume almost back to normal

July 16, 2008

yes meghan- and if you nurse a little more frequently it will also help to increase your milk supply.. all should return to normal :)

July 16, 2008

I went back to the progestin only pill today. I'm a little upset that my dr insisted that it wouldn't dry me up.. that it was "old info" and "never proven" really hope I go back to normal!

July 16, 2008

There is an herb called Fenugreek that supposedly helps increase milk supply. I tried it with ds and I reaked of maple syrup being on it. My dh called me Aunt Jemimah...lol. But ds was very fussy after I started it..and I think it was b/c it changed the way milk tasted..so I ended up quitting.

July 16, 2008

I was taking Fenugreek 3 times a day 2 tablets each and thats what made me going until 2 months. Also theres something called Mothers Tea. It also has Fenugreek, Thyme and other stuff. I bought it, but never used it. Coz I wasnt sure. I would talk to ur Dr abt MOthers Tea. My baby didnt have any prob with breast milk after taking Fenugreek. Infact Fenugreek is supposed to reduce gassiness in adults but no idea abt children. Im still taking fenugreek for general wellbeing as it has a + effect on insulin.

July 16, 2008

**quitting the Fenugreek I mean

Hopen..does it make you smell like syrup too? LOL

July 16, 2008

yep just nurse more often and there should not be a problem it may take a few days but you'll be fine.. :) good luck

July 16, 2008

I've already seen a nice increase in my supply and i just stopped the pill this morning

July 16, 2008

oh yeah meghan I am happy to hear that..

July 16, 2008

Meghan you can also pump in between feedings and that should also help bring your milk back in good. I'd be soooo mad at my doc for misinforming me.

July 16, 2008

I AM!!! this is the first time she's been wrong about something. and the thing is I went back and forth with her for about five minutes making her swear and promise that it wouldn't hurt my milk supply! And it did!!! At least I caught it. Things seem to be startign to go back to normal

July 17, 2008

I'm so happy that you caught it in time. I am still so upset that I couldn't continue to bf Cameron. I loved that bonding time :) Not to mention the cost of the formula he's on is about $8.50 a can of ready to feed and he goes through one can a day and so that's about $250 a month!!! The cost is really killin me, espec being unemployed over the summer. He's such a darn cutie pie though and soooo worth the worrying over the money :)))))

July 17, 2008

i know i would miss bf'ing too much to quit. it would definitely kill me. wow that is expensive!!!!!

July 17, 2008

Holy crap Sara thats expensive!!!! You cant put him on other stuff thats less expensive? I know some of our friends who use Formula use Similac or something and its 25 a can, but it lasts for a good couple weeks I thought.

OMG I cant imagine 250 a month ontop of diapers. That would kill us too. Is all forumula really 250 a month and im being mis informed that its 25 a can that lasts a couple weeks?

Thanks ladies and Meghan so glad your milk supply is coming back in!

July 17, 2008

lol, Jolene the 25 bucks a can is for a can of powder that makes about 160 ounces, so each bottle is 3-5 ounces it depends on how long that can will last you but average is a can a week of powder. I use the ready to feed because for some reason cam does not do good on powder, it makes him gassy and he spits it all up almost instantly. very weird. Also, cam is on the most expensive formula out there for allergies since he had colic and a ton of gas and the pediatrician said this formula would help him, and it really does, he's sooooo happy on it.

I pay about $8.50 a day to feed Cameron right now. Thankfully I have never bought a single diaper or baby wipe yet...my MIL has bought it all and everytime we see her she gives us another box of diapers and wipes, she's a real sweetheart!

July 17, 2008

The $25 bucks a can for 2 weeks??? Mine is 10 weeks and uses $33 similac advance 1/week lol. Actually Diapers are really not that bad.. pampers 216 count for $36 and it easily lasts a month. Ur lucky abt ur MIL! But yup $8.50 a day is a lot. But as u say so so so worth it. If I can I dont mind having 3 more lol

July 17, 2008

Diapers really aren't bad at all. I've been buying the walmart brand, and I pay about $6 bucks every week to week and a half. It would cost even less but for some reason they are always out of the bulk packages of his size diaper!!! So, I have to buy the smaller pack.

Jolene.. you look sooooooo cute!!! I'm loving the belly!!

Sarah.. you are definitely lucky with you MIL buying you diapers and wipes and stuff!! My MIL can't really afford it, but she paid for over half of the cost of Christian's blessing outfit....

I never did post a picture of him in it.. I'll do that....

dh and i both look goofy though.... hehe

Laughing

So, speaking of gifts... can I ask you ladies something.. and be honest with me here... is it wrong of me to feel a little hurt that Christian is almost 2 months old, and i've yet to recieve a gift or card from my dad throughout the whole pregnancy and his life? My dad DID stop by to see Christian, but only because he had to drive through salt lake anyways.. and it only cost him one night of hotel stay.. and only because he insisted on staying at a hotel. we bought an airmattress just for him to be here. And he didn't even spend hardly any time with us while he was here.. only held the baby for like a total of 10 minutes the whole time. Anyways.. am I being materialistic and petty.. or do I have a legit reason to feel a bit hurt? honestly? I can never tell what is okay to feel and what is just hormones

July 17, 2008

Meghan, let me start off my saying you look great! What a nice family photo!!

I would be a little hurt if my Dad did not give us anything..but I am very close with my parents- I visit with them at least once a week.. I think it depends on the relationship you have with him, and the relationship you hope to have with his as a grandfather to your son..

You cannot make someone want to be part of your life.. but on the other hand if you want him to be an active participant in Christians life- perhaps you 2 need to talk about it.. and let him know how much you want him to be there for you and the baby

July 17, 2008

Thanks ladies, maybe it is a can every week. I think she was breastfeeding and doing a formula, when I thought it was 2 weeks, which makes total sense...haha. Still with all the special formulas out there from organic to whatever, hopefully if we have to do formula then it wont be but an extra 100 a month, which is totally fine with me. But I do plan on breastfeeding until he is able to start eating real food, and supplementing some formula, heck I dont know what im gonna do...haha. But I do know I want to breastfeed for atleast 6months or more, and with being stay at home working from home mom, I think I can breastfeed fine and pump while he is sleeping and im working...fingers crossed that works, I have faith...hehe.

Diapers wow a pack that size really lasts a month Hope? I didnt know that. Sweet! We are doing a diaper shower so hopefully we should be great for a long time, but I can deal with 40 bucks a month on diapers, and im sure my parents will be getting those for us here and there when we run out from the showers, which hopefully we will have TONS of diapers for a very long time...haha.

Thanks again ladies for the 411 on this info, as I have no idea, and pray I learn fast :)

July 17, 2008

Oh and Meghan such a cute picture...LOVE IT!

Thanks for the compliment on me looking cute, because I sure dont feel it all the time...haha!

July 17, 2008

Diapers don't last that long at first, Jolene.. but after a few weeks you'll use less and less...

And you really do look great.. I know it doesn't feel that way sometimes.. I remember! Hell.. I still feel that way.. haha.. although.. I feel pretty darn good today after working out!

What kind of work do you do that you are able to work from home? I would LOVE to be able to work from home! I want to be a stay at home mom, but I'd love to feel like i'm financially contributing to the family as well!!

July 17, 2008

Jolene- we were on a special formula, Sar is on the same stuff.. Alimentum by Similac a 16OZ can of powder is $26.99.. well we paid that and probably went thru a can a week maybe a can and a half.. I foget exactly but darn, I was like this is expensive! We get diapers from diapers.com

108 diapers for 37.99 Huggies brand ... Hope where are you getting your diapers, that a great price..

July 17, 2008

Thanks Meghan, yeah I figured not in the begining as I hear its a lot more diapers but yeah as the weeks roll on it gets less and less on how many diapers, but yeah I plan on using a lot in the begining...haha.

How is working out going, I bet it feels great thats for sure!

My family owns a couple companies and well its just my mom, dad, brother and me who run the company all from each others houses, parents at theres, brother at his and me at mine. We all have different jobs and I do all the accounting since thats what my degree is in. Its great and convient, but the only reason I did accounting was to be a stay at home working mom one day, and the day is here. I would have done nursing in a heartbeat but wanted to do whats best for the little one, and so I planned ahead and did accounting :)

Caryn im pretty darn certain that the diapers she is using are Pampers Swaddlers, as I know for 200+ count box its 38 bucks or so, even on diapers.com. Thats what we are going with as everyone I know loves them and raves about them.

July 17, 2008

Yep the allimentum is super expensive...I even called my ins co to see if they'd cover the cost and was told they used to do that but don't anymore....so it's all on us. I think though that once Cam hits 4 months we are going to switch him to the reg similac and see how he does. I heard that their digestive system gets so much better after they hit 4months

July 17, 2008

Heres the link to the ones we will be buying in bulk or having done at our baby shower.

I will buy new borns as we need them but to start out with maybe buy 1 or 2 96 (or however many are in that), boxes. Just depending on how big he will be. Im going to get them at babies r us or somewhere that I can take them back if we dont need them and are unopened, I know babies R us lets you bring unopened boxes back in to them if purchased from them, no matter how long ago it was, from what I hear.
