breakthrough bleeding

October 02, 2007

I'm 28 years old and most recently I was on nuva ring for 13 months. I went off of it in april 2007 and started to try to conceive our second child. I've never had breakthrough bleeding as long as i've been on birth control, even when I've been off of it. Last month I had two episodes of breakthrough bleeding that lasted less than a day each. This month I've had one episode that has lasted 5 or 6 days now. It's not enough to get into a panty liner, but it's there when i wipe. I contacted my OBGYN, and her nurse told me that the doctor would more than likely put me back on birth control to help regulate my periods again. She suspected it was a hormonol thing. Obviosly I dont want to go back on birth control, because I'm trying to have another baby. Are there any other options to help me besides going back on birth control. Shoudn't there be some tests run first?

Hi becky,

Not necessarily any tests to be ran at this time, given that it's only a minimal amount, and shouldn't be enough to interfere with ttc. You obviously don't want to go back on birth control, as that defeats the purpose. Your doc, and this is ok, would most likely advise you to stay the course and continue on, and if the bleeding increases, then may give something (if postovulatory, then micronized vaginal Progesterone products may be warranted). Good luck, and keep us posted
