baby throwing up fresh milk
July 19, 2008
Mommies, need ur advise on this. My kids is 10 W old. I stopped giving Breast milk and shes completely on Similac Advance. She seems to have started this new thing of throwing up milk after feeding the last 10 days. No, its not curdled milk, its just fresh milk. She used to drink 3.5 -4 Oz easily and now she wont take more than 3 Oz and that too about 20 ml or so spits up. I burp her after every oz, carry her for an hour and then lay her down she spits up fresh milk. This is very new to her. Have any of yall experienced this? Earlier, she used to spit up, really less like a teaspoon or less. This doesnt seem to happen in the night times though (or may be I dont see it coz we are both asleep). Today after her milk slightly less than 3 Oz and burping, we took her on her carseat and stroller and the milk just came out so much. Have any of yall experienced this with ur babies? Im really worried. Ive tried diluting the formula and feed her more often, but wont work. I told my Dr 3 days ago that shes spitting milk, he wasnt too concerned or he just mistook that for usual baby spit up.

babies spit up a lot, and sometimes it seems like an alarming amount but as long as she doesnt seem in pain, seems satisfied, and gains weight its probably ok. you can always try a new formula too.
but always trust your mommy instincts if it seems wrong to you, take her to the dr, if only for peace of mind

she seems to be eating lesser than normal. She used to drink 4-4 1/4 Oz every 3 hrs but now, its 3 Oz every 2.5-3 hrs and then all the spit up. No projectile but it just flows down like a mini waterfall. Why would she feel full all of a sudden? shudnt she be drinking more?
Im getting a weighing scale 1st thing tomorrow. God I hate this. I had this obsessive behaviour during pregnancy and now to the baby as well

Hi Hope- I agree with Meghan- Babies spit up alot... and my son also did the same as yours.. it was like nice smooth milk.. He would spit up alarming amounts, almost as much as I just fed him.. we were on Similac too, I called my doctor and she said its normal, but I could not see how it could be.. so after him doing this at EVERY feeding, I switched to Similac Soy, which did nothing to help... finally we switched to Similac Allimentum.. and that seemed to do the trick, along with a Rx for Zantac.( This took us 9 weeks to figure out, as I wanted to give each new formula a chance..)
If it persists, call the Ped. again to make sure.. Here are some possibilites it could be:
the baby is allergic to the formula
the baby has gastroesophageal reflux (Acid Reflux)
the baby has an area of blockage or narrowing in the intestinal tract (pyloric stenosis) Most are diagnosed as young infants for this and the spitting up gets progessively worse, most likely not sudden onset)
Also try feeding her in a more upright position and have her sit up with your support or in a boucer chair.. sometimes putting them on your shoulder pushes on their tummy's causing them to spit up.

THanks Caryn, That was very useful information. Great idea abt not carrying on shoulders. Ill try the other option. She has been on Similac since day 1 and absolutely no issues until the last few days. Could alergy develop after 2 months?
Also, in the night times, 0 spit up, I mean not even a drop.
Pyloric stenosis is the only thing thats bothering me. my friends baby had that very recently and he was doing projectile vomit and almost all the milk 3 or 4 Oz would come out.
Melissa, Thanks for the support. I slept well after knowing Im not the only one that faced this

hey Hope
It probably does not happen in the night because she is not being jostled.. is she sleeping on an incline mat in the crib?
Keeping a baby upright helps.
The chances of it being Plyoric is probably slim.. as jacob was projectile too and he did not have that.. Projectile vomiting is not a pre req for that.. so do not worry too much.
Yes a milk allergy can develop.. DS did develop a light intolerance to milk as a baby, now has a soy allergy.. those with a like allergy grow out if it usually by the age of 5

You can def return the formula to babies r us without receipt, in exchange for another type.
If she's spitting up more than 3 tablespoons of formula at every single feeding and seems to be losing weight, seems to have a hard time taking the bottle, like sucking and pulls her legs up while sucking then call your doc. She def could have an allergy to the formula, colic, gas, or even a more serious issue like what Caryn had said in her post.
Let me know how's she's doing :) Poor little girly!!!!!

I got it at Sams. So, hopefully they will take it back.
So far today, no spitting. Since last night, no spitting.
I reduced the quantity to 3 Oz/feed. I carried her and always put her in an upright position and that helped. No jolting her even by mistake. But Im sure its not going to be this way..
Having said that do yall still think its milk alergy? Im more comfortable discussing with moms than Drs seriously experience is so valuable.

Hey sar...Caden is doing better...knock on wood! I hope is issues were just switching from breast to bottle feeding. But we will see! He sees the doc on Wednesday. Maybe I will be able to take him off the soy. I feel weird that he isn't getting milk. Probably not an issue, but I feel alittle weird about it!
