At home artificial insemination

Hi,

I'm planning on being a traditional surrogate for my twin sister and her husband. We are using her husband's sperm. Do you have any information on the success rates of at home inseminations? Are we taking the best route here, or should we go to a doctor for the procedure? And advice is appreciated!! Thanks, Joy

Hi Joy,

I'm not sure how much you've looked into this issue, and know you have given that you said "traditional" surrogate. First, may be wise to get legal and psychological clearance. Then, consider STD screening for all parties and we give these blanket statements to protect all parties involved...

Many people do perform at home inseminations with reasonable success...however, a doctor's office may be recommendable in this type of situation, especially to make sure all bases are covered. Let us know your decisions, and keep us posted

Dr. Q,

I have talked about this for several months with my psycologist, and my sister has as well. Her DH had a HIV test and it was neg (as I was sure it would be, but I wanted him to have on just in case) I have had one in the past year, so I'm good to go on that as well.

We have not looked into the legal aspects yet, but I'm thinking now would be a good time to do that.

We think it's great so that everything is clear and we're always here to help. Keep us posted on how the process goes, as we're all curious to see everything involved in this (anonymously of course) so that many others can learn as well what's involved in the process...

Hi Dr. Q.

I went to a fertility specialist today to get some blood tests done and another test to check if my tubes are in good shape. The physicians assistant noticed that my cervical or is extremely small. Too small to fit a qtip in (she was trying to do get a Ureaplasma test specimin.) So she strongly suggested that I go with IUI instead of home insemination turkey baster method because otherwise it might take a while for me to get pregnant because the opening is so small. Would you think the small opening is something that would interfere with my fertility? Thanks!

Hi Joy,

Even though the opening is small, sperm are still microscopic which makes a small opening look as big as the empire state building... Hard to justify this as an answer to not getting pregnant and unless you have risk factors for cervical stenosis (previous cervical surgery), then possibly not truly a problem with affecting your fertility...

Thanks for the answer. Do you think some fertility clinics/doctors offices recommend the expensive procedures like IUI to make more money?

Hi Joy1234,

Can't speak for all centers or doctors as each center has their own treatment protocols.

I went for an HSG today, just to make sure my tubes are clear before we get any further. The doctor said they were normal. But she had to use 3 different tools to finally get the dye and to my cervix. She asked if my mother had taken hormones when she was preg. with me, or if I had ever had cervical problems or surgery. I said no to each of these things. So that was a little scary. But eventually the dye went through.

She said I had a narrow cervical canal and I think she said I had a smaller sized uterus. She didn't seem to think that would necessarily cause infertility problems, but hypothesized it might cause an early labor.

Do you have any ideas what would cause this? Would never having had intercourse with a man have anything to do with it? A little personal, I know, but I am curious :/ Thanks.
