Are fertility meds safe?

July 22, 2008

Hello Doctors,

Tomorrow I'm doing a natural IUI cycle. We're going that route for two reasons:

1. We want to see how my husband's sperm responds to washing;

2. Fertility meds make me nervous.

Do I have any reason to be afraid of taking things like Clomid, etc.? I'm kind of squeamish about meds in general, but the thought of OHSS or a blood clot is freaking me out. Am I being irrational?

Thanks.

Hi Christine,

Results will be superior with the IUI especially if you combine this with Clomid...

The risk of OHSS is minimal to almost non-existent with Clomid, and unless one has an undiagnosed clotting disorder, then clots are also not common...best to reconsider to maximize your chances

Hi Christine,

I was super nervous to take clomid!! I called my mom and had her look it up and then I did the same and my husband and I talked it over for a while and then I finally decided to give it a try. The side effects of clomid for me weren't fun but it was pretty much all emotional like super pms. I cried often and had very little patience. After three clomid cycles I moved on to injections and they had very few side effects compared to the clomid. I know 5 people including myself who have been on fertility treatment and only one got OHSS but she was on a pretty high dose of injections. You would most likely start at a low dose and be monitored very well by your doc. She now has twins, boy and girl and one of the others is now preggo too. If you have any questions, you are in the right place!!! Good luck :O)

Thanks so much, Jenstar. For now, it doesn't look like I'll need meds, as our bigger problem is the moderate/severe male factor.
