Antibiotics whilst trying to conceive

January 23, 2008

Hello,

My husband and I are currently ttc and I have developed a UTI (cystitis) with some blood in my urine last night. I am currently on CD11 and should ovulate in the next day or so. However I have been prescribed the anti-biotic MACRODANTIN (100mg) x 28 to take over the next 7 days (ONE four times a day) and am concerned about it affecting us ttc.

I realise we should ideally abstain from intercourse until the infection has cleared up, but should like to know if it will be at all possible to do so in about 2 days, should I feel better?

I should also like to know if the medication is safe, should we already be 'on the way' to being successful already. I ovulated on CD9 last cycle and it's always possible I have missed detecting it this month.

Any advice you could give me would be gratefully appreciated.

Many thanks for your time.

Sincerely,

Christina O'Brien

Macrodanting (macrobid) is a relatively safe antibiotic given to pregnant women with UTIs, and is considered by many docs to be the first choice for treatment of UTIs in pregnant women..

It can be considered safe for one to ttc while on macrobid...

Good luck, and keep us posted...

Thank you so much for your quick response. I am due to ovulate in the next day or so (fingers crossed) and therefore need to make the decision to BD one more time when my monitor shows a PEAK reading.

I think we should leave it at that and perhaps use PRESEED on that one occasion to help make it as comfortable as possible.

Is there any chance of infection spreading inside my cervix and adversely affecting a potential zygote/fetus whilst ttc?

I am so desparate not to miss this chance this month as we have been timing our intercourse so well so far and it feels like just one more time with a PEAK reading would give us our best possible chance for this cycle.

Your response is soooo much appreciated I can't tell you. It feels so reassuring to speak to someone who understands.

little to no chance of infection or adversely harming a zygote, sending you some more...

I'm so grateful for your advice and of course the baby dust is a lovely touch.

Have a lovely day and consider yourself hugged.

I have one more question that I would like to ask in relation to this topic please.

I use a Clearblue Fertility Monitor and was wondering if the antibiotic MACRODANTIN could adversely effect the results? It does colour urine bright yellow, so I thought perhaps it had a strong chance of preventing me from getting clear results. I have so far got eight HIGH readings in a row since CD6 and am still waiting for a PEAK (fingers crossed).

Thank you for your consideration to my question.
