Anterior Placenta?

July 22, 2008

Hi! I had just over 14 weeks today and I went in to the Dr. today because I fell last night ( damn towels on the floor) anyways I went in as a precaution and the dr tried listening to the heartbeat on the dopler and could not find it- (this also happened at my last appointment) So my doctor had me to into ultrasound to double check everything- and the baby is just fine- she said the reason she couldn't hear the heartbeat on the doplar was because I have an "anterior placenta" I asked her if that was bad and she said NO- but I didn't really ask her what exactly that meant- I was just too relieved that everything was okay!

Can you tell me what exactly an anterior placenta is???

Not a problem this early in the game as a placenta can be located anywhere and ok, so long as it's not covering the cervical opening (os), which would make a placenta previa, which is not ok...

Lisa the last ulrasound I had one of my babies had a posterior one and the other had an anterior one. They told me that was fine but I too still worry about it...

I had just never heard of that before- but this part of pregnancy is very new to me!

I beleive Lori had that too!

Hey Lisa- Yes I too have an anterior placenta- and very early they couldnt find the hb on doppler and did an ultrasound to discover the same thing! Its scary walking from the exam room to the sono room wondering whats wrong- so IM sorry that happend to you.

My understanding is that the placenta normally will grow on the back side of your uterus (which is where typically a fertilized egg will attah) but when it attaches in the front (towards your belly button) it makes the anterior placenta) And everyone Ive talked to, doctors etc, have said its fine like dr. Q said- you just dont want it on the bottom covering the cervical opening- then youd have to have a c section- etc.

Ive heard it can make it take longer to feel the baby move. I still felt her about 18-19 weeks- and its getting stronger each week- so dont worry too much. I also heard that they can move - so it may not stay there the whole time ;0)

Glad to hear you are ok- be careful!

Thanks ladies!!!

Lori- yeah that was soooo freaking scary-that walk from the exam room to the U.S room... but it was a HUGE wave of relief once I saw that little one moving and shaking!!! It still amazes me that I CAN"T feel it yet! I mean if my u./s are any indication on what this little one is going to be like... uh oh!! ha ha... HYPER!!!!!!!!!!

But I am sure all babies like to squirm around lol- my husband "blames" the "hyperactivity in utero" on my cell phone usage LOL- (not that long ago- just a few months ago they came out with a study that there is a so called link between hyperactive kids and mother's cell phone use....)

Also thank you for the info! It's much appreciated!

No problem- and I know exactly what you mean- Id stare at the screen while the baby was dancing the footloose routine, and wonder- I CANNOT BELIEVE I CANT FEEL ONE THING! just wait- you will....

Yesterday I was at a doctors office waiting in the waiting room- and there was this big one that like shook me almost and I was kind of embarassed cause I laughed out loud- because I thought surely it was strong enough that everyone else in the room had felt it! LOL So its just around the corner!! And its so reassuring :)

Congrats again!

ha! that's funny... I can't wait til I feel the lil one!!

So... another question: I read somewhere that many times people with an anterior placenta are to refrain from having sex. Is that true? or is that only true once a person is farther along and sex can help aid in sending someone into labor????

That is a good question Lisa!! I would post a new ?? for the Drs!!!

That is what the ladies have that you hear stories about them not knowing that they were pregnant til they delivered. The placenta is in between the baby and you so you don’t feel the kickin and movement a lot.

Im glad everything is a-ok - hey, this way you may be able to see your baby via u/s more than the average person :)

One of my babies has an anterior placenta and the other had a posterior and that is why I think I started to feel the one before the other!
