4 follicles on clomid

May 08, 2008

This is my first cycle of clomid. I took clomid(100 mg) days 2-6 and had a scan (4 days after taking the last clomid pill) I had 4 follicles. Size unknown.

We were planning on having intercourse this weekend but the doctor who did the scan said we shouldn't have sex as it may result in multiple pregnancies. The doctor has asked me to come in again for another scan in 3 days time. (Why?)

Has anyone ever had these many follicles and ultimately have one egg and successful pregnancy? I need your experience to try or not to try this cycle. Thanks.

P.S I am 37 years old, had 2 miscarriages in last 2 years and all blood tests normal but doctor suspects I am not ovulating properly because I have PCOS (without the Syndrome)hence being put on Clomid.

Thanks, Sarah Cassandro

Theoretically, each follicle contains an egg and if these follicles are approximatley 14 mm or larger, they have a reasonqable chance of ovulating. If all 4 ovulate, then there is a small risk of you concieving with quads or triplets. There is also a chance that you may concieve with twins or a singleton gestation. Furthermore, you may not concieve at all.

The reason your doctor asked you to avoid sex is to avoid the conception with 3 or 4 eggs, which could have potentially bad health concequences to you and the fetuses.

Having said that, the chance of this is small. If you do choose to proceed, you should have the discussion with your doctor of the risk of high order multiple gestations.
