36w6d Pregnant Question!!

Hi Dr.Q and Ladies,

I have a question for all you. It's gonna be a long one so I apologize!

Anyways, back when I was 11 weeks pregnant I had a pap smear done at my 1st prenatal appointment and the result came back high grade abnormal. My doctor then scheduled me for a coposcopy. She didnt biopsy anything she just did a vinegar wash on my cervix to look at the cells. Which at that time she said were still abnormal. I was about 17 weeks pregnant at this coposcopy.

She then said not to worry and she would do a follow up pap smear in August. She said sometimes pregnancy can cause abnornmal cells on the cervix and it could possibbly be all the hormones making the cells come up abnormal.

So I just had another pap smear done in Augst at 33 weeks pregnant. I got the resukts back last week and they came back high grade abnormal again. The nurse called me and said they need to do another coposcopy. So I have another coposcopy scheduled for 1:30 today. I ended up going to the doctor yesterday because of increased swelling in my feet and ankles and I asked why I need another coposcopy and if it's safe this far along in pregnancy (I am 36w6d today). She said if the does the coposcopy and the cells are still abnormal they will have to induce labor this week. Does this sound like a normal procedure for someone who has high grade abnormal cells? I completely trust my doctor but I had not heard of being induced until just yesterday. Also, will my baby be ok being delivered between 37-38 weeks? I'm worried a little about his lung development. Ohh and what does high grade abnormal cells mean? Does this mean it's cancer or very close to becoming cancer? My doctor didnt seem at all concerned with the baby but she did seem concerned about the abnormal cells. Thanks so much for your help and any advice or information will be so helpful!

Ohh also, when I went to the dr. last week I was 1cm dialated and 70% effaced. Dont know if this might speed up the labor process since I am a little dialated and effaced.

Hey Maria sweetie! SOrry you are going through this. So first...I've had this happen with the abnormal cells and a colposcopy and then a LEEP. It is good to have the abnormal cells removed. THese cells aren't cancer yet but could lead to them. As far as inducing labor b/c of them....not sure. I mean obviously your doc wouldn't do anything that wasn't needed or called for. I know also that they will check his lungs to make sure of the development. Sar2222 had that done before Cam came. I hope though that they do the colposcopy and the cells will be fine and nothing will need to be done. Hugs to you and little Jake!! :)

Wow Maria!I can only imagine how you are feeling. But, sweetie don't worry.I have read the following:37 weeks pregnant

How your baby's growing:

Congratulations — your baby is full term! This means that if your baby arrives now, his lungs should be fully mature and ready to adjust to life outside the womb, even though your due date is still three weeks away.

So, at 37 weeks little Jakes lungs should be mature and he should be a healthy baby boy if born between 37-38 weeks.

Keller- I had an abnormal pap back when I was a teenager, and had a culposcopy then as well with several biopsys that day- they came back normal once they did the biopsy and said sometimes they clear up on their own? Honestly I dont remember- I remember the culposcopy- it wasnt somethign I wouldve wanted while pregnant- it was uncomfortable then and caused a lot of bleeding and cramping- like I said they did several punch out biopsys that day. (maybe thats why you didnt have the same problem last time that they didnt do any biopsys.)

I do know that I was due for a papsmear in July- and since I was pregnant the doc said he wanted to wait- he said we wont do anything while you are pregnant if its abnormal anyway- so why not wait. Which made me think they didnt do that kind of thing during pregnancy.

I will tell you that a friend of mine had her baby at 37 weeks exactly- and he was perfectly healhy and wonderful. I hope all of this makes you feel better!

((((((((((((((((hugs)))))))))))))))))))))

Please let us know how it all goes today ;) Ill be thinking about you and little Jake! I cant belive its almost time to meet him!!!!!! YEAH!

Thanks so much girls! I am a little nervous because this wasnt something I was expecting. I just read that website Cindee... thanks! The thing I am wondering is that everytime I have gone to the doctor (well not every time but alot of the time) I have a yeast infection! I have probably had about 6 since becoming pregnant. I'm wondering if this could be the cause or if the yeast infections are caused by the abnormal cells? I have never had so many yeast infections in all my life! So as much as I would love to meet my little boy I am praying the cells got better! I will definitly keep you all posted! Thanks so much for all of your support! You girls are the best!

Ohh also when having a coposcopy during pregnancy they do not cut or biopsy anything! All they do is wash the cervix in this vinegar wash and look at the cells that way. My doctor said cutting or anything like that cant be done during pregnancy so the coposcopy's are not too bad. It's definitly not the most pleasant thing! But it's kind of like just having a vaginal exam/pap smear. Which should be pretty uncomfortable at 37 weeks pregnant! I'll keep you posted! Thanks again all of you, you are the best!

Keller don't know a lot about the abnormal cells but I just wanted to assure you that delivering at 37 weeks will be fine! Don't worry. My son was born 4 days shy of 37 weeks and he was totally healthy.

Ohh Thanks so much! That is so reassuring to know! How much did he weigh? My doctor is guessing our little guy is around 7 lbs.

Also did they do an amnio on you to make sure his lungs were fully developed?

I have been a cleaning maching all morning. I just got his diaper bag together and I'm finishing up some laundry. We just had our car seats installed last week... thank god! The car seat went great in my husbands car but the darn thing wouldnt get level in my car! It took the fire department about an hour to get the seat level! But I will keep you posted and thanks so much for all your support! You're the best!
