May 13, 2010

Got my glucose tolerance test results today and failed miserably at 185 :(

i m really scared... doctor says urine tests for glucose were normal for all previous months.

I am asked to take a 3 hour test now....is there any chance of passing that?

do i have diabetes for lifelong?

There is a chance for passing... but if not..

you will require diet control/exercise along with the possibility of insulin during pregnancy.

Gestational Diabetes will usually go away on it's own after delivery... but if weight insn't controlled afterwards, then one is at high risk for developing Diabetes Mellitus II

When I was pregnant with twins, I also failed the 1hour test but passed the 3 hour test. So you still have hope....Like Dr. Q said, even if you don't pass the 3 hour test, once the baby arrives, sugar level should go back down to normal. Just make sure you eat right and don't eat too much junk!

Good luck on your 3 hour test!

Thanks doctor.

I am 25 yrs old and was weighing 125 pounds before pregnancy.

this month, i had some sweets everyday and they have high amounts of sugar. could that have been the reason for a high reading?

when are insulin shots given? if my sugar can be controlled with exercise and diet would i still need them? will my baby have any trouble? am i hurting it?

Your weight sounds just fine. :)

Just because you failed a 1 hour test doesn't mean that you will fail the 3 hour test... was your 1 hour test a fasting test or did you eat before going? Sometimes that affects the results... your 3 hour should be a fasting test.

If you do have gestational diabetes, most likely you will be able to control it through diet and exercise and will not need insulin shots or medications. If your local hospital offers a gestational diabetes nutrition class or a chance to see a nutritionist, definately take it.

What causes the most problems is when moms that have GD do not control it... having high sugars often can cause larger babies than normal which can cause harder deliveries. Also, the baby takes in what you take in, so if you are having a bunch of sugar, so is the baby... you have to remember that you are controlling the baby's blood sugar right now. Another complication that can occur when blood sugar is not controlled during pregnancy is that when the baby is born, their body is used to the amount of sugar you were taking in and when they are born, they will likely have high sugar levels... causing a trip to the NICU... and then once their little body takes over the insulin production, it can go into over drive and cause some low sugars, once again, requiring NICU. Normally these things are resolved quickly, but no parent wants to see their baby go to the NICU for any reason. Believe me, I know... my girls were in there for 3 months (not GD related).

Once again, though, this is only if you fail your 3 hour... I think you'll be fine. :) And even if you do fail, it's not the end of the world... there are ways to take care of yourself and your baby that will result in healthy pregnancy and healthy baby. :)

Once you have GD, though, there is a higher likely hood that you will have diabetes later in life, but you can also control that chance by starting to follow a healthy diet now. :)

Let us know how things turn out. When is your 3 hour?

I've had gestational diabetes with both of my pregnancies from very early on (like 7-9 weeks on) and I've taken the GD diet class twice in less than 2 years, so I'm pretty well versed on what to eat, what not to eat, and how to control sugars... let me know if you need any advice... I'm a well of advice! LOL!

Hey twin mommmy...thanks so much for your advice... and all the information after reading what you said, i m really feeling relieved and a little at ease...i was so nervous since yesterday :( and all my other tests come to be normal everytime..so this is like the first abnormal reading in my 7 months pregnancy..so i was took aback..and was very upset over it. i stopped having sugar since yesterday not even in my milk :( and i was almost afraid to eat anything...ended up almost starving and drinking plain milk...

i have my 3 hours test tomorrow morning... what diet should I follow today? my doctor says have everything normally just dnt load too many sweets and lets check the result... also he says my urine tests showed normal levels earlier...

also, did you need to prick urself like 4 times everyday to keep track of your sugar and all? i read it on the internet and everything is just so disturbing :(

I have my baby shower coming up on tuesday and not able to be happy about it and concentrate on the preparations as well...

I do prick my finger 4 times a day to test my sugar, but really, it's nothing. It's more annoying than anything. LOL!

Definately don't be afraid to eat and drink. Milk is good for you and you need the calcium right now, but it does have sugar in it. This is what I was told to do... no milk in the morning or in the evening. Go ahead and drink it during the day. Watch your carbs, but don't cut them out completely. Try to stick with 30 carbs per meal (2 pieces of bread, 1 flour tortilla, 2 corn tortillas, etc) and 15 carbs per snack. Also, try to have some sort of protein with every meal and snack, whether it be nuts, peanut butter, cheese, meat, etc... that helps prevent your body from turning the carbs directly into sugar. Try to avoid sugary stuff like candy, cakes, and regular soda. Juices also have TONS of concentrated sugar in them. My diabetic diet requires that i drink NO juice whatsoever.

If you stick to something like this kind of diet today and fast before your test tomorrow morning, you should be just fine. I bet the milk was the reason for failing your 1 hour. :)

Here is a sample day's worth of a diabetic diet... cool part is, you don't have to worry about eating too much protein or fats, just watch the carbs and the sugars:

Breakfast: Eggs, Bacon, and 1 waffle.

Snack: 1 piece of toast with peanut butter.

Lunch: Turkey & cheese sandwich, salad with ranch dressing, 8 ounces of milk.

Snack: Handfull of almonds, 4 ounces of milk.

Dinner: Protein burger (cheeseburger wrapped in lettuce instead of a bun), small french fry, side salad, diet soda.

Snack: Popcorn

Totally! Enjoy being pregnant! The baby shower should be one of the most exciting parts of the pregnancy... besides, of course, the baby! LOL! Have fun with it!!

The plan you have for today will definately work, but make sure you add a snack or two in there and also add some protein to your dinner... throw a piece of chicken or some steak and cheese on that tortilla and you are good to go!!

I'm glad I can help you to feel better. I was scared with GD in my first pregnancy, but after that nutrition class, I really felt better. It's not about "I can't have this stuff", it's about "these are all the things I can have!" Feel free to pile on that meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato, olives, sour cream, guacamole, salsa on that tostada, just watch the beans and the tostada shell! I like mexican food, can you tell?? LOL! Thank goodness it's almost lunch time! :)

Keep in touch... let me know how your baby shower shopping goes! And be sure to tell me how your test tomorrow goes!! :)
