2 cm dilated, 50% effaced...and bleeding??
May 01, 2008
Hi Dr. Q!!
I just went to my 37-week prenatal appointment this morning and found that I'm 2 cm dilated and 50% effaced. I have been having irregular contractions, the worse was two nights ago when I haven't slept until 6:00 a.m. The contractions were ranging from 5-10 minutes apart and they're strong enough to wake me up, but they're not that painful yet. After waking from my nap at 2:30 p.m. and felt the urge to go to the bathroom, blood started trickling down the toilet and I was in shock!! I felt like I was having my period! I haven't noticed my mucus plug coming out yet, but I called my doctor right away. I was told to relax and observe for any contractions. I'm keeping a record now of the contractions and they're still very irregular. I do feel a very dull "menstrual cramp" feeling.
What's causing the bleeding if the contractions are not that strong and painful yet? Could the internal exam cause it? The blood was darkish brown looking. I feel very uncomfortable standing up and walking around because of the pressure. I haven't felt this when I gave birth to my daughter because I was induced at 38 weeks. Am I close to having true labor? I'm sure you have experienced this a lot of times, I just want to know your opinion.
Thank you so much, doc!! :-)

Thank you, Liane! :-) I just officially finished attending to my last client last Friday, so I'm off of work now. I can get on here more often. :-) June is the start of the wedding season, and as much as I want to entertain more clients, I had to refuse them...and I started doing so sometime mid-April. I didn't want to commit myself to work on something when I know Bella is just right around the corner. It's a good thing I did because I'm supposed to be due May 23. I can't stop her if she wants to come out anytime soon. As much as we want her to be in our arms soon, I personally want her to wait for another week at least.
LEXIE- I have missed you so...Its Caryn, but I am in cognito LOL... I am happy your wedding dress business is going great!
I can't believe you are going to have a baby so soon!!! Seems like yesterday when you announced it! Sar2222 was induced today (37 weeks) we cannot wait to hear how things go...
Has your bleeding stopped... How are the contractions?
I am thinkin of ya, keep us posted when the baby comes
Love Caryn

Welcome back Lexie!
It is not unusual to have some bleeding after an exam, especially if your doctor "stripped the membranes", for which it may have been done given how dilated you are...I'm confident you were informed that this pregnancy is not high risk and were told that the placenta was in the way, requiring a C/S...
However, if more blood continues and your tummy does become too painful, best to just go to Labor and Delivery immediately...
Keep us posted :)

Thank you for the response, Dr. Q!! Hello Caryn! :-)
The bleeding stopped but I still get brown spotting everytime I go. I haven't monitored my contractions since I ate dinner, but I do get one everynow and then and they're not painful. I don't think my doctor stripped my membranes as I told her that if possible, she can do that next week instead when I'm 38 weeks. I'm scared to give birth to a big baby myself. My daughter was already 7.8 lbs when I delivered her at 38 weeks. She did tell me that I had blood show after she examined me, and that she felt the baby's head already.
Is it possible that she could have stipped my membranes accidentally that why I bled? (even if she said she didn't?) Now I feel like I'm stuck to go on labor soon because everyone in the family started calling me after I told my mother-in-law what happened this afternoon, and everyone is excited that I will deliver very soon. hahaha!

How are you, Caryn? Yes, the business took off pretty well...thank God for that. I didn't expect to get more clients, and it's hard to work without any assistants. But I'm having a blast everytime I work on a dress, though. I don't feel like I'm working at all and time flies by so fast. The last dress that I made was actually a prom dress and my client picked it up last Friday. I haven't finished the baby's nursery room yet and I still have so many things to finish...but after the bleeding this afternoon, I told myself--looks like I will never finish what I need to finish after all, the baby is coming earlier than I thought. hehe!
Yes, I keep in touch with Sarah through her baby website and I can't wait to see Cameron's pictures. Maybe she already had the baby today and will post some pictures 2 days from now. ;-) Bummer for me, my mother-in-law started calling some relatives about what happened. Now, they all want to be informed what's going to happen next. I hate the feeling when everybody seems to be waiting for the big news! Ugh! Now I'm so torn...I want to have our baby in our arms soon, and a part of me tells me that I want to wait another week more. Even my husband keeps asking me every 30 minutes--"how are you feeling? Anything different?" Waaaaaaaaahhhh!! Looks like the pressure is coming from the people around me than the baby herself. hehe!

All is well here, still nto preggo :( Working with an RE, we have encountered some big bumps along the way, but i hope finally all is getting back to normal and we will have a baby soon.
My poor little guy wants a sister or brother so bad!
I am still skating, and now opening up a daycare, I did nto want to go back to work, I love being a stay at home mom, so this is the next best thing!
Hope you will post when the baby comes, and post pictures too!

I definitely will, Caryn. Being a stay at home mom is great! I can't imagine going out of the house to work. I'm glad you're still doing what you love to do--skating.
Yes, you're right, the baby will come whenever she's ready. We've waited this long to reach this far...might as well complete the whole process of delivery. hehe! I'm having cramps and contractions while I'm typing this...still listening to my body closely. I'll definitely keep you guys posted. :-)

Hello Jolene!! :-) I went to the hospital early this morning (5:00 a.m.) when I was having contractions that were 3-5 minutes apart and really started to hurt. I dilated to 3 cm, but I was still 50% effaced. Even if my contractions were strong enough, they weren't causing anymore dilation and I had to be sent home. We were bummed because first of all, we thought we were that close to holding Bella in our arms...and secondly, I can't imagine going through the same pain at home. I was kept in the labor and delivery for another 2 hours and still 3 cm 50% effaced. I haven't seen my mucus plug coming out yet, but I still have the dark brown discharge from my bleeding yesterday. Right now, I just finished eating dinner and I still feel that "pressure" down there as if it's my first day of period. But the weird thing is...the strength of the contractions have subsided. It kinda felt like Bella changed her mind of coming out...she has decided the last minute to wait a little longer.
I felt bad that my in-laws and other family members have started to prepare for her coming. I didn't call them in the middle of the night...my mother-in-law did. YIKES!! She's just all excited, but then, I felt so bad that some of them have even looked for babysitters for their little kids so they can get ready to go to the hospital to visit Bella. But it's all false alarm. No matter what I'll do now, I can walk for miles and naturally induce my labor, if the baby is not ready to come, she won't come. My doctor won't induce me as I'm only 37 weeks. There is no reason for me to be induced, and she encourages me to wait full term. Like Sarah, I am also scared that Bella is going to be big. Although we haven't monitored her weight through ultrasound, I am just HUGE!!! My daughter was already 7.8 lbs when I was induced at 38 weeks (I had a different doctor with her. I was also going to be sent home when I went to the hospital when I first started to have contractions with her, but I asked my doctor if I could be induced and she gave her to me that same day.)
Anyway, that's my story for today...thank you for reading through and sorry for boring y'al with my story. hehe! Right now, I'm just listening to my body, but I told everybody in the family that I don't think it will be anytime sooner.
