I do have a slight septum, confirmed by MRI and now my cycles are irregular again and I do not ovulate every month. A second opinion would cost me a lot of money. My DH is in the military, so we basically have to go with the referral.
The doctor said at my age (23) I should just keep trying by using ovulation strips and maybe charting my BBT and if it doesn't work for another year to come back and we might do some Clomid or so.
It doesn't seem right to me, but am I being over eager?

You've already been trying for a year, and treatment should be appropriate for you now, irrespective of you age. If you were to try for the entire year without treatment, your pregnancy rate statistically is 7.5%. Have another conversation with your doc to at least start Clomid for now.
