"Good HCG/Low Progesterone" - now on supplements...will I miscarry?
July 23, 2008
Dr Q, I had some very minor brown-ish spotting yesterday. My doctor instructed me to get a blood test. Called today and told me my HCG levels were "good" but my progesterone was low at 8.5. He started me on 200mg suppositories, twice daily, and i have to go back for another blood test in 2 days.
I am 20 days past ovulation (conception occurred July 3) - but my LMP was June 16. I know when I conceived because i was using fertility monitor...
How quickly do progesterone levels rise while using the suppositories? What are my chances of carrying this baby to term?
Please help, i'm so nervous. This is my 2nd pregnancy (1st was a chemical).
thanks!

thank you Dr. ! and peanut!
i don't want to get my hopes up too much, but this will help me to remain positive :)
no clinical conditions that i've been told about...just the prior chemical pregnancy. i hate the suppositories, but i'll do anything to help keep this pregnancy on track.
thanks again! test on friday, so i'm praying constantly until the doctor calls with results...

Thank you Lisa and Amy :) i'm very hopeful that this pregnancy will stick! i'm a little concerned because i wasn't put on the prog until the level came back low AFTER i was spotting (just a tiny tiny bit) already...but we'll see. no spotting since before i started the prog, and blood test first thing tomorrow, so we shall see! Thanks again and best wishes to you both!!
My progesterone levels wasn't 'low' but my doctor wanted to see it a little bit higher. I think it was 14. She prefer it be at 20. Every doctor is different though. Also, I was having a little bit of pink when I wiped. It can cause you to be a little 'raw' inside. I never felt like I was raw but when I wiped I got pink so she checked and said that is what it was. That was when I first started taking it. So if you see this, don't panic. Hope this helps.
Just wanted to update...i had more blood work done, and my hcg level fell from 3319 to 2947 in three days...and my progesterone went from 8.56 to 46.90 as a result of the supplemental therapy. Things, unfortunately, aren't good. The doctor needs me to re-test on Monday and go in for an ultrasound on Tuesday to rule out ectopic pregnancy. He said there is always the possibility that the lab screwed up one of my tests, but he said it really just doesn't look good.
now i'm freaked out about ectopic pregnancy and future fertility, but i guess i'll just have to wait it out. by the way, no bleeding at all and no real abdominal discomfort...although if i read one more internet site about anything, i'm probably going to start imagining symptoms.
i just wanted to update this post so anyone else that has experienced the same thing can see how my situation is turning out. i will post next week the conclusions...

okay with those levels you should be able to see a heart beat for sure on a sonogram so why didnt he do a sono as well dont get woried there could have been two and that is why your hcg dropped a little bit are you still spotting? are you having cramps take a deep breath it is okay more important then your hcg should be your sonogram insist that someone does a sono right away
amy, lisa and jenn, thank you for your notes...and peanut! thanks for looking into my situation. you're very kind. so, i guess we'll see. it's so odd, since the progesterone test came back within normal range (albeit, the high end of normal) and the hcg level fell, i have had NO spotting whatsoever. Nada. Zip. Zilch. i have scoured every corner of the internet trying to find evidence of someone with my same situation...so in hopes of helping someone out in the future, i'm going to map it out here for some woman who is probably sitting up late at night doing the same thing i've been doing...i hope this helps someone...
19 DPO: spotting (minor, brown, no cramping..but called doctor because this is what happened in previous m/c...which was a chemical preg)
19 DPO: Dr. ordered blood tests
20 DPO: Blood test shows "good" hcg of 3319 and "low" prog of 8.56; doctor prescribes 200mg 2x day of progesterone suppositores
21 DPO: minor spotting continues (brown only and very minor - felt as though mostly due to leakage from suppository use)
22 DPO: blood test shows progesterone increased to 46.90 but hcg fell to 2974. doctor said switch to prog 1x day. he said it doesn't look good, but have to confirm with u/s and another blood test to rule out lab error. ectopic also possible. no spotting second half of this day at all
23 DPO: no spotting whatsoever. not sure if i have any pelvic pain. i know that sounds crazy, but with all of the reading i've done about ectopic, i worry i'm inventing symptoms...either way, no severe pain
Today is 23 DPO - I must get another blood test on 25 DPO and u/s on 26 DPO...i will update when i have more info...
thanks again for all of your kind words...and i'm sorry for the long post (just want to help someone else that may have same prob)

Hello everyone!
So, i just came back from the u/s and everything is on track. i'm just about 5w5d and things looked good - but they can't see the heartbeat yet but the doctor said that he wasn't concerned at all because you wouldn't necessarily see it at this point. so i have to go back next wednesday to see what's happening.
so, there's still hope! i'm in shock, but happy as that is the best possible news that i could have received at this point.
i can't thank you all enough for your concern and words of encouragement :) i will keep you posted.
