New comments on 'HSG vs Saline infused sonogram'

I have had a saline infused sonogram and Re said tubes and uterus look good, is this just as good and hsg to show open tubes? What are the differences and is one better than the other?

New comment from Divamama

I just wanted to post some additional information on this subject because there is some slight suggestion out there on the internet that the

SIS is used by some docs to check tubes. Here is what one individual commented in regards to someone asking about SIS to check tubes on another website:

I had the saline sonogram done. My doc explained that with the saline, they can see if there are any blockages, but with the HSG they can see more, more clearly. She said with the saline she just wanted to make sure it was spilling out of the tubes, which, we could see on the ultrasound.

Here is a link that is also rather useful

http://entrustedsoul.blogspot.com/2007/07/saline-sonogram-psa.html

So basically in a nutshell, the SIS can or may infact detect only if there is a "free spill" of the tube and not if their are any other abnormalities like an HSG would; which explains why is "less invasive" . I felt compellted to do more research on this because I was trying to figure out why your doctor would tell you that the SIS showed open tubes. Now, I have a better understanding.

I would like to know the same question as kcttc... because I had just the saline injected in my uterus and my doctor also told me my tube was open and he seen the spillage from my tube... I only have one!! So now I read this post and get a little worried wondering if my tube is blocked... hmm. Is there anyway the saline can go through the tube and they see it?

New comment from TTC after Miscarriage has!! @ due 03/11/2010

kcttc#2-As someone already noted, the hsg should be done before before referred to an RE. It is one of those preliminary tests along with a semen analysis and others.

What are the limitations of Sonohysterography?

Sonohysterography should typically not be performed in women with active pelvic inflammatory disease.

Sonohysterography may have a few limitations in certain clinical situations. In women with stenosis of the cervix, it may be somewhat difficult to insert the catheter into the cervical canal so that saline may be injected. Inadequate distension (expansion) of the uterine cavity from the saline injection may also prevent good-quality ultrasound images from being obtained. This can occur especially with uterine adhesions (scarring) or large benign tumors called fibroids, which may partially obliterate the uterine cavity.

Also, sonohysterography is limited in the assessment of the patency, or openness, of the fallopian tubes because of their size and structure. In such cases where an abnormality of the fallopian tubes is suspected, a procedure such as hysterosalpingography might be recommended for further evaluation.

They are totally different. I had the HSG done by an OBGYN, he needed me to go to a medical center nearby that had Xray since he did not. When I switched to the RE, he repeated the HSG in his office and then did the saline right after....He made it hurt less than the OBGYN. THe OB needed to use a clamp to grab my cervix...ouch...THe RE said he uses a smaller catheter and does not need the clamp. I am surprised that yours did not do them both since you were there.....

New comment from Divamama

mmmm..I just did a search and found that SIS are manily used to detect or shw uterine abnormalities and not tubal. If I were you, I would "kindly demand" a HSG. In addition to that, you should as for the results of your FSH and antral follicle counts, etc. The doctor should NEVER perform these tests on you without going over the results...or else, how will you ever know what is going on with your body? I don't know if you are familiar with my story, but my old RE didn't even tell me that I had a bad tube...I just so happen to be looking at my chart and noticed it. We wasted money on 5 IUI cycles because of it. Needless to say, we ended up changing RE's and will be doing IVF in Jan 2010 after I lose 20 pounds. No offense, but it sounds like your doctor isn't very aggressive and that can be a little dangerous when dealing with fertility. My defination of "agressive" in the fertility sense is a doctor who won't stop until you "take home a baby" A doctor that listens to you and makes recommendations that you both agree on, and will benefit you in the long run. You should indeed have CD21 blookwork to check your progesterone levels too.

good luck

hmm.. I asked him about hsg and he said he would do sis instead to check tubes and uterues... I am sure he has done fsh and antral follicle counts, but I never got any results, NONE of my dr's have done progestrone, I have never had bloodwork past cd 9... Idk, that ticks me off, because I was gonna have reg ob do hsg and he said, well this is less evasive and basically shows the same...wth.. It doesn't check your tubes at all? It hurt like hell!

momma-I agree. I've had both as well. The hsg is a radiologic procedure to investigate the shape of the uterine cavity and the shape and patency of the fallopian tubes. With the saline infused sono (Dr. Ayers did this looking for polyps), it is done in the office with saline through a catheder, like an IUI and viewed over the ultrasound monitor and took less than five minutes.

From what I understand kttc these are two totally different tests. I have had both. The saline sono is to check for imperfections in the uterus like polypsa or scarring. The saline does not go into your tubes just fills the uterus so not sure how the doc could tell someone the tubes are clear based on theis. The hsg is dye that is put in thru catheter and they actually have you twist and turn on the table to get it into the tubes and watch it spill freely from them into the uterus. If you have not had an HSG and have been trying now for some time, I would definitely request it. In addition, I believe I read that your doc has never given your FSH, Progesterone and other bloodwork results. It is IMPERATIVE that you have this information. How can you advocate for your own care if you do not know what your working with? I really am amazed that this DR is so forthcoming regarding what weight you need to be, but hasn't provided you with any information regarding test proven issues that may be causing your infertility. I think you have some work ahead of you with this RE if you are going to be successful in his care. Good luck and baby dust!!!

HSG vs Saline infused sonogram

I have had a saline infused sonogram and Re said tubes and uterus look good, is this just as good and hsg to show open tubes? What are the differences and is one better than the other?
