New comment from Dr. Q

Hi Lexie,

A chemical pregnancy by definition is a pregnancy that produced hCG (such like in your case made your hpt turn positive). A clinical pregnancy is a pregnancy that was actually visualized on ultrasound. This is the medical jargon that's used. We hope your Clomid works this month, and yes, 7 dpo is the best time to check your Progesterone levels

What is a chemical pregnancy by the way, doc? A lot of my friends have been telling me that I had chemical pregnancy because 3 of my HPTs turned light pink, then yesterday, my HPT was really negative, not even a faint line visible. I had spotting last night, then got my period this morning. I have already asked for a refill of my Clomid. They would not give me 100 mg because they said, I had a resolving cyst on my right ovary last month. But anyway, I will start Clomid again on Sunday and try again after that. I will try to find a way to get my progesterone checked after I ovulate. When is the perfect time to have it checked, doc? at 7 DPO?

Hi Rachel,

hpt only turn positive if there is bhCG (one of the pregnancy hormones) around. Many people do have unfortunately early chemical pregnancies and do go away. I'm sorry that this happenned, but we always must be optimistic in looking at it like "I know pregnancy can happen because I now have proof". I encourage you to try again this month and please keep us posted

On Thursday I was heavy bleeding like my period. Could this be a chemical pregnancy since it was positive or a false positive? My OB said false positive. I am wondering about the chemical if it was could we still try this month?

Thanks
